Closed Air, A Memoir of The Least Impressive Impressive Festival I've Ever Been To (Part 1)

September 24th, 2016. I remember that day like it was yesterday, possibly because of the unrequited misery that came along with it. My group of friends and I awoke early in our lovely little blood stained hotel in Houston to prepare for what should've been an awesome show. We did all the things you'd expect from a group of metalheads early in the morning, got breakfast, and headed out to NRG. Walking to the gates, all our metal brethren seemed to be going the wrong way......but no, the gates were closed. Possible storms were inbound, and the fear of lawsuits were catastrophically high. Rain or shine? All lies. Apparently, the organizers seemed to think we came to Open Air in 95° weather with the hopes of staying dry the entire time. Many great bands were scheduled to play. Slayer, Anthrax, Alice in Chains, and so many more. Day two offered Ghost, Avenged Sevenfold, and Hell yeah among others. But so far day 1 was making the ticket prices feel even more like a ripoff. Finally, they moved us from the lobby of a conversation center (obviously the best place for mildly irritated metalheads) and we converged as a massive line surrounding the gates. After about 20, minutes of standing in the heat deeply regretting our minimal amount of fluids, the gates opened, summoning forth an immense hoard of sweaty, irate metalheads. Once inside, all seemed fine. Merch everywhere, cold Monster, live music, hot chicks. Yes, this is what we came for. In line to meet Anthrax, the unthinkable happened. Our little friend the cloud, who had come to stave off sunburn for maybe an extra hour, petrified the hosts and organizers of Open Air and the music stopped. They announced that we all had to exit through the gates until the weather cleared, despite literally no rain in sight and the "rain or shine" clause on our tickets. This is where I lost my group, as I initially refused to exit, along with many others. I payed for this festival after all, and I think I deserved the experience. After 30 minutes of walking around joking with staff and concert goers alike, I finally made my way to the gates and headed back out......
